Geary Detention Center Releases

A release entry ends one booking at the Geary County Detention Center. It does not always mean the person walked into the community free of other custody or court duties. Bond and time-served releases can return a person to the community while a criminal case or supervision continues. A dismissal can end one charge, though another case or hold may remain. A transfer closes Geary County custody while another agency takes control.

Those details help distinguish a bond release from a transfer. If Kansas Department of Corrections takes custody, the later prison and supervision record belongs in KASPER. Another county, federal authority, or ICE must confirm its own custody. The county timestamp proves departure from this jail only.

Confirm a Geary Jail Release

The jail record and the court record serve different purposes. Geary County Detention Center documents physical custody, while the court file explains the order or case event connected to release. A bond can end jail custody while charges remain pending. Time served can satisfy the custodial part of a sentence while another term continues. A dismissal may resolve one case without clearing a separate hold. For that reason, an actual release timestamp should be paired with the court and docket shown on the booking whenever those fields are present.

ICE After a Geary Release

An ICE hold changes the plain meaning of “released.” A person can leave the Geary County Detention Center and enter immigration custody without returning to the community. The county release timestamp still matters, but it documents only the end of Geary County custody.

The ICE Online Detainee Locator accepts either an A-number with country of birth or an exact name with country of birth. It includes current ICE custody and some people released from ICE custody during the prior 60 days. Minors and certain protected records are excluded, and updates may lag. A blank result is not proof of freedom. No ICE detention center or immigration contract was verified for the Geary jail, so the facility should not be described as an ICE detention center.

Geary Jail History and Planning

The jail’s official history traces a clear expansion. The 1950 building began with 21 beds. A 1986 addition raised capacity to 82, and an addition opened in 2009 brought the stated total to 160. Those figures describe facility development, not a daily inmate count.

August 2025 County Commission minutes discuss the difficulty of replacing the facility and the possibility of housing people outside the county for six to eight months during construction. The minutes record planning, not an approved closure or current transfer plan. Until an operating change is officially documented, Geary County Detention Center remains the verified local civilian detention facility and the New World inquiry remains its public release-search route.

Future records could name an outside housing location if a plan moves forward. When that happens, the facility holding the person and the agency that created the release entry must both be checked.
